Oktoberfest Munich: a beer festival

Oktoberfests weren’t rare in the earlier Bavaria. As many traditions these fests were only established to have a reason for drinking beer. The specialty of these festivals was the so called “Märzenbier” with more alcohol in it than normal beer.

Oktoberfest Munich: The first one

The first Oktoberfest in Munich which is the origin of the Oktoberfest we know now was held due to the marriage of prince Ludwig and his fiancé Therese in 1810. That’s the reason why the palce where the Oktoberfest takes place is called “Theresienwiese”. In the first year it consisted only of a horse race. As the citizens liked the event so much the royal Bavarian court decided to let the event take place every year.

 Oktoberfest Munich: today

As of today the Oktoberfest is visited by more than 6 million people. Many of them are from the USA, Italy, Australia or even Japan.
